Monumental complex of Santa Chiara

The foundation date of the church and convent of S. Chiara dates back to 1344, by Matteo Conte di Sclafani and Adernò. The fourteenth-century physiognomy of the building was changed in 1678, according to the project of the architect Paolo Amato. The precious altar stands out inside, entirely covered with gilded bronzes, lapis lazuli, agates and amethysts and completed by a spectacular canopy; and on the walls of the presbytery, two paintings painted by the famous painter of Dutch origin Guglielmo Borremans: the Monacazione of Santa Chiara and S. Francesco who takes off his father's goods. The two paintings date back to 1735 .. The picturesque bell tower rises on the left of the simple facade of the church of Santa Chiara. Original seventeenth-century architectural element that survived the bombings of the last world war, it seems to dominate the square with its slender physiognomy. It is divided into three orders with loggias and well-kept decorations and carvings in stone. From the last loggia, surrounded by the bells of the monastery of Santa Chiara, a majestic and magnificent Palermo is shown to the visitor's eye.
